What Is A Float Switch?
A float switch is a wired device that connects to the front of the air handler within the HVAC system. It sits in front of the drain pan and monitors the condensate water levels inside the unit.Â
How Does It Work?
The float switch has a plastic piece that floats on top of the water. When a clog occurs and water levels rise, the float rises with it. When the float is high enough, it triggers a signal to shut down the A/C system.Â
Why Do I Need iFLO If The Float Switch Monitors The System?
Float Switches are NOT as reliable as iFLO! Here's why:
Â
1.  The float switch is not required to be installed on all air handlers in all states!
While it may be required in a state like Florida where drain line clogs have been a historically pressing issue, most states have not put solutions into place to protect against the rise in danger for drain line clogs since the industry switch from copper to aluminum coils.
Â
2.  A float switch does not always trip properly!
Even when a float switch is installed on a system properly by a professional, it is not guaranteed to work every time due to manufacturer error.Â
3.  You're at risk when the system doesn't shut down!
The average A/C unit produces 1.5 gallons (6 quarts) of condensate water per hour. The average air handler drain pan can hold 3 quarts of water before overflowing. If a clog forms in the system, the float switch fails to trip, and the A/C continues to run, a homeowner has an estimated 15 minutes to react to the system filling up with water before the drain pan begins to overflow!
Â
How Does iFLO Guarantee More Than A Float Switch?
iFLO's proven formula consists of enzymes that break down zooglea-bacteria! Once dispensed into the condensate water, the enzymes get to work preventing bacteria from growing in the system.
With iFLO preventing zooglea-bacteria clogs, it ensures water cannot back up to trip the float switch; let alone overflow from the drain pan. The float switch is then only responsible for clogs caused by other, less common issues in the drain line (i.e. bugs or lizards).
